What Is Drain Repair & What Are Your Options?
Drain repair is the rectification of structural defects in underground drainage pipework — cracks, fractures, displaced joints, root ingress, partial collapse or full collapse — that have been identified by a CCTV survey. Modern repair techniques fall into three categories: no-dig patch lining for localised defects, full no-dig pipe relining (CIPP) for longer sections, and traditional excavation for cases where no-dig is not viable.
The vast majority of drain defects in London properties can now be repaired without excavation. No-dig methods avoid disruption to gardens, driveways, patios and floors, complete in a single day, and provide a sealed internal pipe with a 50+ year design life. They are typically 30-60% cheaper than excavation once you factor in reinstatement of paving and landscaping.
MAMOSS carries out drain repairs across Bethnal Green and East London — patch lining from £450, full pipe relining from £85 per metre, and excavation work where no-dig is unsuitable. Every job is preceded by a CCTV survey to confirm the defect location and select the right technique, and finished with a post-repair CCTV verification.
- Patch lining for localised cracks, fractures and joint defects
- Full pipe relining (CIPP) for longer damaged sections
- Junction and lateral lining for branch connections
- Manhole rebuilding and benching repair
- Excavation and replacement for total collapse
- Root ingress removal with mechanical cutter
- Pre- and post-repair CCTV survey included
- 10-year workmanship warranty on all repairs
Common Drain Defects That Need Repair
A CCTV survey will typically identify one or more of the following defects. Each has a preferred repair technique — and getting the choice right is what separates a 50-year repair from a 5-year repair:
Cracked or Fractured Pipework
Hairline cracks and full fractures, usually caused by ground movement or load above the pipe. Patch lining is the standard fix — quick, cheap, and seals the defect permanently.
Displaced Joints
Old clay drains often have joints that have moved over time, creating small steps that snag debris and cause repeat blockages. Patch lining bridges the joint and restores smooth flow.
Root Ingress
Tree and shrub roots find their way into joints and cracks, then grow inside the pipe — eventually causing total blockage. Mechanical root cutting followed by patch lining or relining seals the entry point permanently.
Partial Collapse
A section of pipe wall that has fallen inwards but the overall pipe shape remains. Often relinable provided enough structural integrity remains. Severe partial collapse may require excavation.
Full Collapse
The pipe has totally failed and the bore is blocked or missing. No-dig is not possible — excavation and replacement is the only solution. CCTV mapping minimises the dig area.
Misalignment / Wrong Falls
Pipework laid with insufficient fall (or back-fall sloping the wrong way) causes constant standing water and recurring blockages. Re-laying the section is the only fix — but mapping shows exactly which section, minimising the work.
Our Process
Our Drain Repair Process
Pre-Repair CCTV Survey
Every repair starts with a CCTV survey to confirm the location, type and extent of the defect, and to select the right repair technique. The survey footage informs the entire repair plan.
Repair Method Selection
We recommend the most cost-effective and durable repair option — usually no-dig patch lining or relining. Excavation is only used where no-dig is not viable. We explain trade-offs in plain language and provide a fixed-price quote.
Pipe Preparation
The pipe is cleaned with high-pressure jetting and any roots or debris removed with a mechanical cutter. The repair area must be clean and dry for resin curing.
Liner Installation (No-Dig)
For patches: a resin-impregnated fibreglass patch is positioned at the defect using a packer (inflatable bladder), pressed against the pipe wall, and cured in place. For full relining: a resin-soaked fabric liner is inverted into the host pipe and cured.
Curing
Resins cure in 1-3 hours depending on type (ambient cure, hot water cure, or UV cure). After curing, the packer/bladder is deflated and removed, leaving a structural pipe inside the host pipe.
Post-Repair Verification
A second CCTV survey verifies the repair is correctly installed, smooth, and the bore is fully open. The verification footage is supplied to you and forms part of the 10-year workmanship warranty documentation.
The Benefits of No-Dig Drain Repair
No Excavation, No Disruption
Patios, driveways, gardens and floors stay intact. Most repairs complete in a single day with the only disruption being the manhole or rodding eye access point.
50+ Year Design Life
Cured-in-place liners are structural pipes in their own right, made from epoxy or polyester resin reinforced with fibreglass. Independent testing shows 50+ year design life — typically longer than the original pipe.
30-60% Cheaper Than Excavation
Once you factor in excavation cost, materials, reinstatement of paving and landscaping, no-dig is dramatically cheaper for most defects. Even where excavation cost looks comparable on quote, the no-dig disruption saving is huge.
10-Year Workmanship Warranty
Every repair is guaranteed for 10 years on workmanship plus the manufacturer's liner warranty (typically 25-50 years). Post-repair CCTV evidence supports any future warranty claim.
Insurance Approved
All major UK home insurers accept no-dig drain repair as a valid restoration method for subsidence and escape-of-water claims. Pre- and post-repair CCTV provides the evidence chain insurers require.
Same-Day Completion
Most patch lining and short-section relining jobs complete in a single working day. You typically have full drainage use restored the same evening.
Drain Repair in Detail: Pricing, Techniques & Limits
Patch lining is the workhorse repair for the vast majority of localised defects — single cracks, fractured joints, isolated root entry points, small displaced joints. Each patch covers up to 1 metre of pipe, costs from £450, takes 2-3 hours from arrival to completion, and is guaranteed for 10 years on workmanship. Multiple patches in a single visit are discounted.
Full pipe relining is used where defects extend along longer sections (typically 3+ metres) or where a length of pipework is structurally degraded throughout. A resin-soaked fabric liner is inverted into the host pipe with air or water pressure, pressed against the pipe wall, and cured. Pricing is from £85 per linear metre with minimum charge of £750 to cover setup. Larger jobs price down per metre.
Lateral relining is a specialist technique for branch connections (where a property's drain joins the public sewer). The liner negotiates the tee junction and seals both the lateral and the connection point in one operation. Useful where the connection itself is the source of root ingress or escape of water.
Excavation is reserved for full collapse, severe misalignment requiring re-grading, or pipework that is too small or too damaged to accept a liner. CCTV mapping precedes excavation so we dig the smallest possible trench — typically 1.5-2 m for a localised collapse repair versus 5-10 m for a blind dig. Excavation pricing is project-specific based on depth, ground conditions and reinstatement requirements.
We also rebuild collapsed manholes, repair benching (the shaped concrete inside a manhole), replace broken inspection covers and frames, and carry out lift-and-relay of short sections of cracked clay pipework where lining is not viable. Whatever the drain defect, MAMOSS has the technique and the kit to fix it.
