Why Gas Cooker Installation Must Be Done by a Gas Safe Engineer
Connecting a gas cooker, hob or oven to the gas supply is restricted work under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 — it must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the correct domestic cookers competence on their card. DIY installation is a criminal offence and creates a real risk of gas leaks, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Even where a flexible bayonet hose makes the connection look simple, a compliant installation requires checking the existing gas supply pressure and pipework size, fitting an approved bayonet socket if one is missing, performing a tightness test on the entire gas system after connection, calibrating the cooker's burner pressures against manufacturer specification, and issuing a gas installation safety certificate documenting the work.
MAMOSS installs gas cookers across Bethnal Green and East London from £95 — including all the above checks and the safety certificate. We work with freestanding cookers, built-in single and double ovens, and gas hobs of all brands (Bosch, Neff, Smeg, Belling, Stoves, Rangemaster and more).
- Pre-installation gas supply pressure and pipework check
- New bayonet socket fitted where required
- Approved Macsalvors flexible hose to current standards
- Full tightness test on gas installation
- Burner pressure check against manufacturer spec
- Combustion check on gas ovens
- Stability bracket fitting (legal requirement)
- Safety certificate issued same day
The Risks of a Non-Compliant Cooker Installation
DIY gas connections and 'cash-in-hand' jobs by non-registered fitters cause serious incidents in the UK every year. Compliant installation matters because:
Criminal Offence
Carrying out gas work without Gas Safe registration is a criminal offence under the Gas Safety Regulations. Both the person doing the work and the householder commissioning it can be prosecuted.
Gas Leaks & Explosions
Incorrect connections, missing tightness tests or wrong fittings cause gas leaks. Even a small leak in a kitchen can build to an explosive concentration overnight. Multiple UK fatalities every year.
Carbon Monoxide
Gas ovens with incorrect burner pressures produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. CO has no smell — the only way to detect a problem is correct combustion analysis during installation.
Voided Manufacturer Warranty
Most cooker manufacturers (Bosch, Neff, Smeg, Belling) require Gas Safe certified installation as a warranty condition. DIY installation voids the warranty entirely.
Voided Home Insurance
Home insurance policies require gas appliances to be installed by a registered engineer. Any incident traceable to a non-compliant installation will result in claims being refused.
Failed CP12 for Landlords
If you are a landlord and a tenant has installed their own cooker, your annual CP12 inspection will identify it and may classify it as Immediately Dangerous — disconnecting the appliance and creating tenant disputes.
Our Process
Our Gas Cooker Installation Process
Pre-Install Survey
On arrival we check your existing gas supply: bayonet socket condition (or fit one if missing), supply pressure at the meter, and pipework adequacy for the cooker's gas rate. This determines whether any preparatory work is needed.
Disconnect Old Appliance (If Applicable)
If we are replacing an existing cooker, we cap the supply, disconnect safely, and remove the old appliance to a position you specify (we cannot dispose of it, but we will leave it ready for council collection).
Position & Level New Cooker
The new cooker is positioned, levelled and (for freestanding cookers) the legally required stability bracket fitted to the wall behind the cooker.
Connect Gas Supply
An approved Macsalvors flexible hose (or rigid pipework for built-in installations) is fitted between the bayonet socket and the cooker. Joints are sealed with appropriate compound and tightened to manufacturer torque.
Tightness Test & Combustion Check
We perform a manometer tightness test on the entire gas installation, then light each burner and oven to verify correct gas rate, burner pressure and combustion.
Demonstrate & Certify
We demonstrate safe ignition and operation, brief you on the cooker's controls, and issue the gas installation safety certificate. Your manufacturer warranty paperwork is completed and registered.
Benefits of Professional Cooker Installation
Legally Compliant
Gas Safe registered work means you are fully compliant with UK gas safety law and protected from prosecution risk.
Manufacturer Warranty Valid
Compliant installation activates your full manufacturer warranty (typically 2-5 years on parts and ignition systems).
Insurance Valid
Home and contents insurance remains fully valid for any gas-related incident.
Safety Certificate Provided
Written documentation of the installation — useful for landlord records, future CP12 inspections and home sale conveyancing.
Stability Bracket Fitted
Freestanding cookers must by law be fitted with a stability chain or bracket to prevent tipping. We supply and fit this as standard.
Correct Burner Calibration
Manometer testing and burner pressure adjustment ensures the cooker operates exactly as the manufacturer designed — efficient, safe, and producing minimal CO.
Cooker Installation in Detail: Pricing, Brands & Edge Cases
Standard freestanding cooker installation (existing bayonet socket present, like-for-like swap) starts at £95. If a new bayonet socket is required (older properties without one, or where the existing socket is in the wrong position), add £45-£75 depending on pipework run. Built-in oven and hob installation is £130-£180 typically because of the additional fitting work.
For range cookers (60 cm width and above) the gas rate is higher than a standard cooker and we always check the supply pipework can deliver enough gas — older 15 mm copper supplies may need upgrading to 22 mm, particularly on long runs. We will advise on survey if upgrade is needed.
We work with every major brand including Bosch, Neff, Siemens, Smeg, Belling, Stoves, Rangemaster, AGA, Britannia, Indesit, Beko and Hotpoint. We carry the most common bayonet hoses, fittings and stability brackets on the van as standard, so most installs complete in a single visit.
LPG cookers (used in some properties without mains gas) require a different competence on the engineer's Gas Safe card. We are LPG-certified and install LPG cookers including bottle changeover regulator fitting and pressure testing. LPG installs are typically £20 more than mains gas installs to cover regulator equipment.
Disconnection and removal of an old cooker (without replacement install) is also offered as a standalone service from £55, including capping the supply and issuing a disconnection record. Useful when selling a property unfurnished or doing a kitchen renovation.
